「魅せる、バックヤード」

お客様に見えないように在庫や工具を置いておくスペース、通称バックヤード。散らかりやすいため、普通はパーティションで仕切られたり、別の部屋に設置して隠されることが多いです。

現在の事務所を作るとき、一番苦労したのはこのバックヤードでした。ダックビルはIoTシステムの開発・販売だけではなく、実際の設置工事も行うため、工事用のバックヤードが必要になります。また、作業台も同じで、いつの間にか荷物置き場になって景観が悪くなりがちです。

「バックヤードと作業スペースはパーティションで事務所と切り分けたい」という現場からの意見がありましたが、申し訳ないけれどそれは却下しました。隠したい部分にこそ、会社の本質が現れるからです。あえて、その隠したくなる部分を隠さずに表に出すことにしました。

もぅ、こうなったら単に整理されたバックヤードではなく、「魅せる」ためのバックヤード・作業台を目指すことにしました。ラックもめっちゃかっこいいものに。でも、予算は事務用のスチールラックより抑えてね。そう指示したら、IKEAでかっこいいものを調達してきてくれました。

設置工事や地震対策のボルトも自分たちで工夫してくれています。いいですね、自分たちで作ったバックヤード。整理整頓は特定の部署の責任ではなく、全員で行います。乱れたらすぐに直す。もはやバックヤードではなく、愛着あるフロントヤードです（笑）。

ダックビルのフロントヤードを見たお客様からはよく褒められます。「綺麗だね」と。いただいたお言葉はそのまま信用につながると考えています。誰もがバックヤードが散らかっている会社より、綺麗にしている会社に発注したいでしょ？

今ではバックヤードと作業台が、ダックビルが大切にしている「心」を表現してくれていると思います。社員の皆さん、素敵なフロントヤードと作業台を大切に使ってくれてありがとう。今後もお客様に褒めていただける事務所・会社を作り上げていきましょう。

“Showcase, the Backyard”

A space to store inventory and tools out of the customers’ sight, commonly known as the backyard. Since it tends to get cluttered, it is usually partitioned off or set up in a separate room to keep it hidden.

When we were setting up the current office, the biggest challenge was this backyard. Duckbill not only develops and sells IoT systems but also carries out the actual installation work, requiring a construction backyard. Additionally, workbenches often become places to store items, negatively affecting the aesthetics.

There were suggestions from the field that “the backyard and workspaces should be partitioned off from the office,” but I had to reject that idea. This is because the essence of the company is reflected in the parts you want to hide. We decided to bring those parts out into the open instead of hiding them.

Since we were going this route, we aimed for a “showcase” backyard and workbench, not just a neatly organized one. I instructed to get cool-looking racks but within a budget lower than the standard office steel racks. They went to IKEA and got us some stylish items.

Our team also put thought into the installation and earthquake-proofing bolts themselves. It’s great to see a backyard they created themselves. Organizing is not the responsibility of a specific department but of everyone. If it gets messy, it’s fixed immediately. It’s no longer just a backyard but a beloved front yard.

Customers often praise our front yard. They say, “It’s so clean.” We believe that these compliments directly translate to trust. No one would prefer to place orders with a company whose backyard is messy over one that keeps it tidy.

Now, I believe that the backyard and workbench represent Duckbill’s brand. Thank you to all our employees for taking good care of our wonderful front yard and workbench. Let’s continue to build an office and company that our customers will praise.
